It is associated withnon-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Symptoms of Hashimotos thyroiditis includeMyxedematous psychosis, weight gain,depression,mania, sensitivity to heat and cold,paresthesia, fatigue, panic attacks,bradycardia,tachycardia, high cholesterol,reactive hypoglycemia, constipation, migraines, muscle weakness, cramps, memory loss, infertility, and hair loss.

The thyroid gland may become firm, large, andlobulatedin Hashimotos thyroiditis, but changes in the thyroid can also be nonpalpable. Enlargement of the thyroid is due tolymphocytic infiltrationand fibrosisrather than tissuehypertrophy.

Hashimotos thyroiditis is often misdiagnosed asdepression,cyclothymia,PMS,chronic fatigue syndrome,fibromyalgiaand, less frequently, as ananxiety disorder. Testing forthyroid-stimulating hormone(TSH), Free T3, Free T4, and the anti-thyroid antibodies (Tg) and thyroid peroxidase (TPO) tests can resolve any diagnostic difficulty.

Hashimotos when presenting as mania is known as Prasads syndrome after Ashok Prasad, the psychiatrist who first described it.

Risk factors: A family history of thyroid disorders is common, with theHLA-DR5gene most strongly implicated conferring arelative riskof 3 in the UK. In addition Hashimotos thyroiditis may be associated withCTLA-4gene since the CTLA-4 antigen acts as an inhibitor to T-Cell activation only if the red blood cells have an RH factor of negative 3.25.

Preventable environmental factors, including high iodine intake, selenium deficiency, and pollutants such as tobacco smoke, as well as infectious diseases and certain drugs, have been implicated in the development of autoimmune thyroid disease in genetically predisposed individuals.The genes implicated vary in different ethnic groups and the incidence is increased in patients with chromosomal disorders, includingTurner,Downs, andKlinefelters syndromesusually associated with autoantibodies against thyroglobulin and thyroperoxidase.

Graphene was made in a lab in 2003, but by 2014, it reportedly reached $9 million in sales predominately inelectronics, battery energy andsemiconductors.Graphene is100 times stronger than steel by weight and efficientlyconducts heat and electricity. Its a new material that can store bits of small energy or make battery terminals more efficient.

Scientistsat the University of Manchester, Englanddecided to use graphene in a completely different way: to neutralize cancer stemcells (CSC) and not harm other cells.

The scientistsused a modified version ofgraphene oxide flakes on six kinds of cancer cells where it hurts cancers the most, in the stem cells. They discovered that it acts as an anti-cancer agent that selectively targets stem cells. With cancer, stem cells are the origin for tumors, but they also withstand radiation, chemotherapy and surgery and typically are known to re-seed a tumor, even when it looks like it has been eradicated.

From the lab experiments, the scientistsreport the graphene oxide flakes inhibit the key signaling pathways active in the CSCs.

Cancer stem cells differentiate to form a small mass of cells known as a tumour-sphere. We saw that the graphene oxide flakes prevented CSCs from forming these, and instead forced them to differentiate into non-cancer stem-cells, saidDr.AravindVijayaraghavan, University of Manchester.

Researchers want to use the graphene oxide as a type of washing solution and after surgery, pump it into cancer area to destroy any stem cell survivors, so there is no chance of it returning or re-seeding.

According to the results of the study, the results showedthat graphene oxide had a non toxic effect on thecells which suggests thetreatment could havefewer side-effects asan anti-cancer therapy. The results of the study are found in the current issue ofOncotarget.

AUGUSTA, Ga. Fat and sugar aren't usually considered healthy staples, but scientists have found that a biological fat with a sugar attached is essential for maintaining the brain's store of stem cells.

Neural stem cells help the brain develop initially, then repopulate brain cells lost to usual cell turnover as well as to a trauma or malady, such as a head injury or stroke.

While the cell population and activity decrease as a natural part of aging, scientists at the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Regents University are studying how neural stem cells are normally maintained with the long-term goal of helping the supply stay robust despite aging as well as infirmity.

They have discovered that in mice missing the sugar containing lipid ganglioside GD3, neural stem cells have a dramatically impaired ability to self-renew, said Dr. Robert K. Yu, MCG neuroscientist and corresponding author of the study in The Journal of Neuroscience.

The scientists focused on brain areas with typically the largest supply of neural stem cells: an area just below several midbrain cavities filled with cerebrospinal fluid, called the subventricular zone, as well as the hippocampus, a major center for learning and memory.

Mice missing ganglioside GD3 on the membranes of neural stem cells had much smaller supplies of the cells in these key areas throughout life and expressed signs of lost hope with behaviors such as not actively seeking dry land when placed in water, Yu said. Additionally, the mice had impaired maintenance of the area of the brain involved in the sense of smell as well as the portion of the hippocampus that enables formation of new memories.

The changes, which correlate with aging or illness, were corrected when GD3 was restored.

New York, Oct 21 (IANS): The immune system is crucial to fend off diseases, but if it is hypersensitive to stress, the risk of depression may go up, says new research.

Pre-existing differences in the sensitivity of a key part of each individual's immune system to stress confers a greater risk of developing stress-related depression or anxiety, the findings showed.

"Our data suggests that pre-existing individual differences in the peripheral immune system predict and promote stress susceptibility," said lead author Georgia Hodes from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in the US.

Under normal conditions when the immune system perceives a threat such as an invading virus, inflammatory proteins called interleukins are released by white blood cells as an adaptive mechanism to limit injury or infection.

But the researchers found that interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels were higher in mice that were more susceptible to stress than in stress-resilient mice.

They also found the levels of leucocytes (white blood cells that release IL-6) were higher in stress susceptible mice before stress exposure.

"Additionally, we found that when mice were given bone marrow transplants of stem cells that produce leucocytes lacking IL-6 or when injected with antibodies that block IL-6 prior to stress exposure, the development of social avoidance was reduced," Hodes added.

The findings demonstrated that the emotional response to stress can be generated or blocked in the periphery.

Evidence in the current study is the first to suggest that interleukin 6 response prior to social stress exposure can predict individual differences in vulnerability to a subsequent social stressor.

The study appeared in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Protein appears to protect against bone loss in arthritis

A small protein named GILZ appears to protect against the bone loss that often accompanies arthritis and its treatment, researchers report.

Arthritis as well as aging prompt the body to make more fat than bone, and the researchers have previously shown GILZ can restore a more youthful, healthy mix. It also tamps down inflammation, a major factor in arthritis.

Now they have early evidence that GILZ might one day be a better treatment option for arthritis patients than widely used synthetic glucocorticoids, which actually increase bone loss, said Dr. Xingming Shi, bone biologist at the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Regents University.

Their research is being presented at The American Society for Bone and Mineral Research 2014 Annual Meeting Sept. 12-15 in Houston.

In addition to bone loss, glucocorticoids, such as prednisone, produce other side effects, including diabetes. While GILZ is induced by glucocorticoids, directly overexpressing the protein appears to better target sources of bone loss and inflammation and avoid these serious side effects. .

For this study, the focus was tumor necrosis factor alpha, a proinflammatory cytokine that helps regulate immune cells and is a major player in arthritis. Tumor necrosis factor alpha primarily works though promoting inflammation, which is great if the target is cancer. However, when tumor necrosis factor alpha becomes dysregulated, it can also cause diseases like arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.

To look specifically at the impact on bone loss, the researchers crossed mice bred to overexpress tumor necrosis factor alpha throughout the body with mice that overexpressed GILZ in just their mesenchymal stem cells. These stem cells produce the osteoblasts, which make bone. They also make fat, and when the cells stop making as much bone, they tend to make more of it. Shi's lab has shown that GILZ can coax mesenchymal stem cells back to making more bone and less fat.

While the mice that overexpressed only tumor necrosis factor alpha quickly developed arthritis along with significant bone and weight loss, those that also overexpressed GILZ had significantly less bone loss, Shi said.

"Our previous studies have shown that the GILZ transgenic mouse can make more bone," said Dr. Nianlan Yang, MCG postdoctoral fellow. "We wanted to see if GILZ would still have a bone protective effect in an inflammatory environment similar to arthritis."

Next steps include developing an oral medication, a peptide specifically, that increases GILZ expression rather than the genetic alterations the researchers have used in animal models, said Yang. She just completed a National Arthritis Foundation fellowship, which helped support that effort. They also want to see if GILZ can prevent arthritis from developing in the face of inflammation.
