WESTFIELD - Westfield High School Principal Derrick Nelsonis being remembered as "a gift" to the high school and town community.

"As a committed educator he understood that he was a role model at all times,"Westfield Superintendent of Schools Margaret Dolan said Tuesday during a news conference at the district's administration building. "He knew he was a role model for students, for the staff and for his colleagues and he never forgot that. He was a good man."

Dolan said Nelson, a Plainfield residentwho died Sunday, had a strong moral compass that was evident as he worked with staff, and even when dealing with challenging issues involving students.

Since Nelsons death, Dolan said she has spoken with students, parents, teachers, custodians, secretaries, counselors and nurses, many offering stories about his caring ways, his infectious laugh or his commitment to his students. She noted the student government is planning a vigil for Nelson.

"I remember how he was forever taking on new challenges, sometimes working to better understand a new curriculum, sometimes looking for ways to improvea complex high school schedule but always with a vision of what Westfield High School could be," said Dolan.

She extended condolences to Nelson's parents, fiance and daughter. Dolan said the family is still working on the funeral arrangements.

"Many of us are struggling with his loss but we are committed to continuing Derrick's legacy. We will set high standards for ourselves as Derrick set for himself. And as Dr. Nelson has done, we will think a little less of ourselves and much more of the others who are around us," Dolan said.

Nelson's family told NJ.com that the 44-year-old educator never regained consciousness after donating bone marrow to a boy in France in February. His father, Willie Nelson, said his son never spoke again.

Nelson's family kept a vigil at Hackensack University Hospital, according to the NJ.com story, but he never came out of his coma.

An online story in February from the Westfield High School student newspaper "Hi's Eye" indicated Nelson was donating stem cells to save the life of a 14-year-old boy in France. The newspaper story indicated Nelsons blood was a match for the boy.

In the story, Nelson indicated he donated blood in 1996 as part of a college fraternity blood drive and then learned last fall that it could be a match for a child in France.

The story indicated Nelson initially planned to donate stem cell through bone marrow, but because he acquired sleep apnea when he served in the military, putting him under general anesthesia was considered too dangerous. Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder in which people repeatedly stop and start breathing.

With the donation of stem cells through bone marrow ruled out, the student newspaper story indicated Nelson was set to undergo intravenous therapy in which plasma would be separated from the stems cells from the blood taken out of his arm. But that too was ruled out because he carried the sickle cell trait.

The student newspaper story indicated doctors then decided to use a local anesthetic to remove the bone marrow, while also watching his breathing.

In the student newspaper story, Nelson characterized the procedure as giving him a little bit of pain to help someone else.

"It's all worth it," Nelson said in the student newspaper.

Westfield High School seniors Avery Conrad and Adam Holtzman, who both work on the weekly student newspaper, said they have been working on Friday's four-page edition as a tribute to Nelson since learning of his death.

"We have been completely humbled by the responsibility of commemorating Dr. Nelson as well as the response we have received from the Westfield High School community as well as everyone who knew Dr. Nelson," said Conrad, adding the newspaper has reached out to hundreds of his fraternity brothers, school alumni, other principals, people he served with in the Army, friends, peers and college friends who have been happy to sharetheir experiences and memories of Nelson.

"It really shows how much impact he had," said Conrad, the news editor, adding the newspaper won't be able to capture all of Nelson's attributes, but just shines a light on what he meant to everyone.

"This man meant so much to the community, the high school, the town, everyone who knew him. Even if you never spoke a word with him, his impact was felt the moment you walked in as a freshman or the moment you left as a senior for alumni who are in college or beyond that," said Holtzman, a sports editor."It's really tough right now. We really want to commemorate him and honor his legacy."

Holtzman said this week's edition may be the most important thing they have done at the high school.

Dolan said Nelson loved his time with his family and would come into meetings with stories about the latest barbecue or birthday party.

"And he had a smile that only came out when he was talking about his loved ones,"Dolan said, adding Nelson was also admired and loved in his community and church.

She said the members of his Omega Psi Phi fraternity also were part of Nelson's family.

"You could not find a more loyal group of men," Dolan said, adding somehow Nelson also managed to serve in the U.S. Army Reserve for more than 20 years, including serving in the Middle East.

Dolan said Nelson had an "honest respect" for everyone and was a great listener who would take in different sides of a story before giving an answer.

"He was thoughtful. He always had that vision of what we were going to do this year and next year and four years from now. That was one of the strengths of his leadership," she said.

Dolan said counselors have been making themselves available at the high school which alsohas a strong team of three assistant principals and a director of counseling working together to make sure students receive the education and support they need. Any discussion about a new principal is not expected until the school board's April 30 meeting.

"He's so well respected I'm sure we'll find ways to honor him," Dolan said.

Nelson was named principal ofWestfield High School, a building with more than 1,800 students,in February 2017. He previously served asacting principal since August 2016 and assistant principal since July 2012. He began his administrative role in the Westfield Public Schools as assistant principal of Roosevelt Intermediate School in 2010.

Prior to coming to Westfield, Nelson was assistant principal in two public schools in Orange, serving students from kindergarten through middle school. He began his career in education in 2002 as a teacher in the Plainfield school system.

Nelson earned a doctorate in education administration from Seton Hall University. He also received a masters degree in education administration from Saint Peters College and a bachelors degree in mass communication from Delaware State University.

SignalRx is a clinical stage company incorporated in Delaware in 2012 and based in San Diego, California. The company is focused on developing effective anticancer treatments based on blocking the most important and critical cell signaling pathways that cancer cells use to proliferate, migrate, metastasize, and recruit a blood supply. One of our most advanced programs is centered on the PI3 kinase pathway where our lead compounds go beyond the traditional kinase-inhibition mode of action by additionally inducing oxidative stress and inhibiting reflux-pump resistance mechanisms in cancer cells.

Our efforts are aimed at combining the maximum anticancer activity into our drugs by selectively inhibiting as many important cancer targets as possible in a well-tolerated non-toxic manner with a special focus on cancer stem cells (progenitors of the bulk differentiated cancer cells).

There is no shortage of cancer treatments today either approved or in clinical development, the shortage is cancer treatments that significantly improve survival of cancer patients said Dr. Don Durden, Scientific Advisor.

Evolving Cancer Biology Creates the Opportunity. The phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) signaling pathway continues to be a hot cancer target illustrated by recent acquisitions, licensing deals, and major pharma development activities. The founders of SignalRx were inventors of the second PI3K inhibitor to enter the clinic and were leaders capitalizing on the PI3K biology with the only integrin targeted pan-PI3K inhibitor. More recent biology indicates that PI3K inhibitors will benefit when combined with other anticancer therapeutic agents that block other important cancer-relevant pathways/targets.

SignalRx is pursuing several programs targeting the combined inhibition of key pathways involved in cancer proliferation, metastasis, and angiogenesis as well as cancer stem cell biology.

The founding team is built of leading experts with experience in discovering and bringing cell signaling inhibitors to the clinic. The company has close ties and interactions with the University of California San Diego Moores Cancer Center and key faculty therein.

Cellular medicine does more than treat symptoms, it restores the bodys ability to heal itself.

Many people today are looking for alternatives to invasive surgery or endless pain medications that can have serious side effects. Regenerative medicine such as cellular therapies work by harnessing the bodys innate ability to grow and heal itself. Cellular therapy involves using innovative treatments to help avoid or reduce the need for surgery. Stem cells have the potential to treat a wide range of diseases and injuries, and based on how they are obtained and where they originate from, different stem cells have different capabilities. At Regenerative Medical Center of Delaware, we offer cellular to help reduce and heal inflammation in the body and repair damaged tissues.

What Are Stem Cells and How Do They Work?

At the Regenerative Medical Center of Delaware, we offer four different types of cellular therapies to aid in the repair of joint pain and injury and muscle degeneration.

As the very foundation of every cell in your body, the primary role of stem cells is to maintain and repair the tissue in which they are found. Stem cells have the ability to develop through a process called differentiation and self-renew (make copies of themselves) into many different types of cells, such as skin cells, brain cells, lung cells and more. Stem cells are a key component ofregenerative medicine, as they create opportunities for new clinical applications. developing completely new ways to treat and manage chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart failure, and degenerative nerve, bone and joint conditions.

There are four different types of stem cells they originate from different areas of the body, and they have different healing functionalities:

The Power and Uniqueness of Regenerative Cells

Stem cells are a distinct kind of cells that possess the ability to replicate and regenerate themselves within the human body. Adult mesenchymal stem cells function as a kind of internal repair system, possessing the ability to differentiate to replenish other cells. These regenerative cells have the unique capacity to remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a specific function within the human body such as bone, cartilage, muscle or skin cells. Given their powerful and unique regenerative nature, adipose derived regenerative cell therapy offers new potential in the treatment of certain indications.

Cell Rich Fat Transfer (CRFT) protocol is a special harvesting process with a unique cannula, which gently removes small adipose cell clusters that have been loosened inside the body via mechanical dissociation. It is a harvesting and transfer method that yields consistent volume of highly viable adipose derived regenerative cells (ADRCs). The CRFT method of autologous fat transfer has been shown to be superior to other methods, including those including enzymatic processing.

The high yield of ADRCs resulting from the in vivo dissociation of regenerative cells makes fat harvested using the CRFT protocol an ideal re-injectable material for achieving predictable outcomes. Studies have shown that CRFT protocol, which uses sterile decantation, preserves the integrity of fat cells and prevents the separation of free floating ADRCs, versus using a centrifuge method, which tends to damage fragile cells and can deplete the separated fat of beneficial ADRCs. Our system also adheres to the FDAs minimal tissue manipulation guidelines and follows good tissue practice regulations, unlike other systems that use an enzyme and are used off-label.

After fat is harvested, the final product is referred to as Stromal Vascular Fraction (SVF). While not all potential elements of SVF have yet been identified, we do know it is composed of stem cells and growth factors. Growth factors are very powerful messengers that can signal cells in our bodies to reduce inflammation, repair, replenish and specialize for many functions and are currently being used more in clinical settings. Another source of concentrated growth factors known asPlatelet Rich Plasma (PRP)is already used frequently in orthopedics, wound care and cosmetic surgery, and performed in our office.

The Regenerative Cell procedures goal is to harness and enhance the bodys natural mechanism for healing. Cell Rich Fat Transfer (CRFT) is performed in-clinic by our board-certified physician and cardiovascular surgeon, Dr. Henry Childers, assisted by our credentialed medical staff. This cutting-edge procedure is normally conducted on an outpatient basis and under local anesthetic. The total procedure normally takes about 2-3 hours, varying based on the patients condition and overall health. The goal of regenerative cell treatment is to minimize pain and advance function without the need for invasive surgery.

This procedure essentially entails taking adipose tissue, essentially fat, out of your body, separating the regenerative cells via our CRFT protocol, and reinjecting them into injured tissue for regenerative purposes. This in-clinic treatment is completed the same day, and there is no need to ship samples to an outside laboratory and wait days for the cells to be returned for an injection on a second visit. This faster process provides increased regenerative cell counts, without manipulation.

1. Harvesting of regenerative cells:The harvesting of regenerative cells is primarily acquired using in vivo dissociation with a liposuction procedure to obtain adipose tissue.

2. Separation of regenerative cells:Through sterile decantation, the Stromal Vascular Fraction (SVF) is separated from the harvested fat cells.

3. Isolation of cells: Using multi-filtration methodologies, regenerative cells and other cells are isolated from the SVF.

4. Activation of regenerative cells: Once the isolated regenerative cells are acquired it is added to the patients Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and activated based on medical procedure protocol.

This process, during its duration, is constantly monitored and controlled by our physician. When considering regenerative cell therapy or making a decision to undergo the procedure as an ideal candidate, it is important to discuss your options with Dr. Childers. Devising a comprehensive treatment plan is crucial, as everyone is different and outcomes will vary.

These regenerative cells have the one of a kind ability to remain an undifferentiated cell or turn into another sort of cell with a particular capacity inside the human body, for example, bone, ligament, muscle or skin cells. Given their great and extraordinary regenerative nature, fat inferred regenerative cell treatment offers new potential in the treatment of specific signs.

FDA Cracks Down On Stem-Cell Clinics Selling Unapproved Treatments – Delaware First Media

Posted: August 30, 2017 at 11:51 am

The Food and Drug Administration is cracking down on "unscrupulous" clinics selling unproven and potentially dangerous treatments involving stem cells.

Hundreds of clinics around the country have started selling stem cell therapies that supposedly use stem cells but have not been approved as safe and effective by the FDA, according to the agency.

"There are a small number of unscrupulous actors who have seized on the clinical promise of regenerative medicine, while exploiting the uncertainty, in order to make deceptive, and sometimes corrupt assurances to patients based on unproven and, in some cases, dangerously dubious products," FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said in a statement Monday.

The FDA has taken action against clinics in California and Florida.

The agency sent a warning letter to the US Stem Cell Clinic of Sunrise, Fla., and its chief scientific officer, Kristin Comella, for "marketing stem cell products without FDA approval and significant deviations from current good manufacturing practice requirements."

The clinic is one of many around the country that claim to use stem cells derived from a person's own fat to treat a variety of conditions, including Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and lung and heart diseases, the FDA says.

The Florida clinic had been previously linked to several cases of blindness caused by attempts to use fat stem cells to treat macular degeneration.

The FDA also said it has taken "decisive action" to "prevent the use of a potentially dangerous and unproven treatment" offered by StemImmune Inc. of San Diego, Calif., and administered to patients at California Stem Cell Treatment Centers in Rancho Mirage and Beverly Hills, Calif.

As part of that action, the U.S. Marshals Service seized five vials of live vaccinia virus vaccine that is supposed to be reserved for people at high risk for smallpox but was being used as part of a stem-cell treatment for cancer, according to the FDA. "The unproven and potentially dangerous treatment was being injected intravenously and directly into patients' tumors," according to an FDA statement.

Smallpox essentially has been eradicated from the planet, but samples are kept in reserve in the U.S. and Russia, and vaccines are kept on hand as a result.

But Elliot Lander, medical director of the California Stem Cell Treatment Centers, denounced the FDA's actions in an interview with Shots.

"I think it's egregious," Lander says. "I think they made a mistake. I'm really baffled by this."

While his clinics do charge some patients for treatments that use stem cells derived from fat, Lander says, none of the cancer patients were charged and the treatments were administered as part of a carefully designed research study.

"Nobody was charged a single penny," Lander says. "We're just trying to move the field forward."

In a written statement, U.S. Stem Cell also defended its activities.

"The safety and health of our patients are our number one priority and the strict standards that we have in place follow the laws of the Food and Drug Administration," according to the statement.

"We have helped thousands of patients harness their own healing potential," the statement says. "It would be a mistake to limit these therapies from patients who need them when we are adhering to top industry standards."

But stem-cell researchers praised the FDA's actions.

"This is spectacular," says George Daley, dean of the Harvard Medical School and a leading stem-cell researcher. "This is the right thing to do."

Daley praised the FDA's promise to provide clear guidance soon for vetting legitimate stem-cell therapies while cracking down on "snake-oil salesmen" marketing unproven treatments.

Stem-cell research is "a major revolution in medicine. It's bound to ultimately deliver cures," Daley says. "But it's so early in the field," he adds. "Unfortunately, there are unscrupulous practitioners and clinics that are marketing therapies to patients, often at great expense, that haven't been proven to work and may be unsafe."

Others agreed.

"I see this is a major, positive step by the FDA," says Paul Knoepfler, a professor of cell biology at the University of of California, Davis, who has documented the proliferation of stem-cell clinics.

"I'm hoping that this signals a historic shift by the FDA to tackle the big problem of stem-cell clinics selling unapproved and sometimes dangerous stem cell "treatments" that may not be real treatments," Knoepfler says.

Paul Worrilow has a great back story.

The veteran linebacker, who signed with the Lions in March, was undrafted out of Delaware.

He made the Atlanta Falcons, against all odds.

Cracked the starting lineup, against all odds.

Became the teams leading tackler, against all odds.

Stuck around for four seasons, against all odds.

But theres more.

Its a story about being selfless and thinking about others. Its a story that should be repeated, if only to inspire others to follow his lead.

More Lions news:

Detroit Lions CBs coach: Interceptions 'will come' for Darius Slay

And it started with a simple cheek swab.

Its so simple, Worrilow said.

When Worrilow was a sophomore at Delaware, he joined the Be The Match Foundation Registry, hoping to become a bone marrow donor.

Four months later, he was matched with a 23-year-old woman with leukemia.

Worrilow donated peripheral blood stem cells to the woman, although he doesnt know what happened to her. He doesnt know her name. He never has met her.

Its so simple, Worrilow said. They do a cheek swab. You get put in the database. If you match somebody, there are two ways to do it. You can donate actual bone marrow or do it like I did, peripheral blood stem cells.

About one in 40 registry members will be called for additional testing.

About one in 300 will be selected as the best possible donor for a patient.

And about one in 430 on the registry go on to donate bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cells.

Odds are, you never will be asked to donate.

But you just might give somebody hope.

Its so simple, Worrilow said. Its not painful. Its a small part of your time, to have a great impact, a tremendous impact on another person and their family. Its a no-brainer. You can have a great impact at such a small cost to yourself.

Worrilow is on a mission to let people know about it: The cool part about it is being able to share it (with people) who are ignorant to the process and their ability to help other people. Encouraging people. People who just dont know what Be The Match Foundation is. Or how you can help people with blood cancers, or how you can join.

Worrilow signed with the Lions during the off-season.

This team is tremendous, Worrilow said. The family-oriented vibe here. From the head coach, from the ownership on down, you can feel it. Its a family vibe. They look after you, care for you.

In June, during minicamp, Worrilow played weak-side linebacker. But he can also play in the middle.

Its going good, he said. There is a lot of competition. The team is great that way, pushing each other. Any action I can get on the field is exciting. When youre winning games, and everyones in here practicing hard, its just awesome.

Worrilow has a track record for good tackling, but he has been criticized for his inability to cover.

If (the criticism) is there, its probably there for a reason, he said. Criticism, if it doesnt come from a bad place, it is probably warranted. And thats something I have to improve on. Thats with all parts of my game. I dont feel like I have played my best football yet.

Worrilow said he is adjusting to the Lions defense, making defensive calls.

Compared to the other places Ive played, there is a bigger volume of calls, he said. Thats something I like. Both linebackers do it. One guy has the indicator, but if you are not out there talking, you arent going to be out there.

And now, as he takes time off before training camp, he feels confident about himself and this team.

I dont feel like I could be in a better place, life-wise, work-wise, everything, he said. Its an encouraging place to come in and work every day. The linebacker group is awesome. Its young. Its competitive. Thats what you want.

So, this guy keeps breaking the odds.

Sticking in the NFL. And trying to use that platform to help others.

Trying to raise awareness.

Trying to encourage people to make a difference.

Trying to break the odds.
