About Penn’s IRM – Institute for Regenerative Medicine

The Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania differs from many stem cell centers by bringing together talent and discoveries from medicine, bioengineering, veterinary sciences, and more. Together, we are working to understand the basis by which we can generate new cells and tissues for therapeutics, diagnostics, and research.

The goal of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine (IRM) at UPenn is to create new cells and tissues for research, diagnostics, and organ repair and replacement therapies. To this end, the IRM enables diverse experts to come together for basic research in stem cell biology and tissue regeneration and translates our discoveries into new clinical therapies to alleviate suffering and disease.

The IRM at UPenn is distinct from other stem cell and regenerative medicine institutes around the world by engaging scientists, clinicians, and ethicists from medicine, engineering, veterinary sciences, dental medicine, a childrens hospital, and the arts and sciences. Together, IRM investigators use cutting-edge methods to understand how cells and tissues are formed in the natural processes of embryonic development and during the bodys ability to repair itself. We use the principles learned from the natural processes to generate new cells and tissue fragments in the laboratory and to control tissue regeneration in the body. Our work is aimed to model and study human diseases, to develop new diagnostics and medicines, and, ultimately, to replace damaged, aged, or diseased body parts.

The IRM sponsors annual Symposia with speakers from around the world, Distinguished Lecturers from leaders in the field, Stem Cell Club for trainees and faculty, Faculty Lunch meetings, specialty Program meetings, IRM Training Fellowships, and IRM Collaborative Research grants, all of which foster collaborative interactions among our outstanding faculty and trainees, along with diverse resources including a stem cell and tissue differentiation core facility. Our latest collaborative initiatives include support for high-throughput screenings to alter cell fate, single cell analyses of cell function, and optimizing conditions to control the differentiation of cells from stem cells.

The IRM also promotes extensive outreach to the community, teaching at all levels about the science behind stem cells and regenerative medicine and the promise of the field to the future of humankind.
