Oklahoma City The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has taken a more aggressive approach toward clinics selling unproven stem cell treatments, and that's ultimately good for the development of future treatments, an Oklahoma researcher says.

The FDA has mostly left stem cell clinics alone, but that creates a situation where patients are undergoing treatments that might be unsafe, said Paul Kincade, scientific director of the Oklahoma Center for Adult Stem Cell Research.

What I've been afraid of is somebody's going to die and it's going to kill the whole field, he said.

The FDA issued a warning letter to a Florida clinic for failing to ensure the cells it used weren't contaminated by bacteria or viruses, and seized several vials of smallpox vaccine from a California clinic using it in its stem cells preparations. The vaccine couldn't cause smallpox, but could lead to other serious reactions when given to people with compromised immune systems, according to the FDA.

Increased enforcement doesn't mean that patients can now assume stem cell clinics are safe, however. Many may not even be using true stem cells, which require a complex process to make, Kincade said.

The phrase one step ahead of the sheriff' comes to mind, he said.

Stem cells are essentially precursors that develop into other types of cells. Embryos in the early stage of development have large numbers of stem cells, but those are rarely used because some people object to destroying an embryo. Adults have stem cells in their bone marrow, intestines and skin, which allow the body to replace those cells throughout a person's lifetime, Kincade said.

A few years ago, however, scientists developed a process to essentially reprogram an adult cell to return to a state like an embryonic stem cell, Kincade said. Through the right processes, scientists could theoretically coax stem cells into becoming whatever type of cell a patient needed to treat a disease, such as pancreas cells to produce insulin for people with diabetes or brain cells making dopamine for people with Parkinson's disease.

It's a long way from practical application, however, because scientists have to sequence the DNA of every cell to ensure it hasn't mutated to cause cancer, Kincade said. The costs can easily run as high as $2 million.

Commercial stem cell clinics typically don't go through that process, however, Kincade said. Usually, they take cells from a patient's fat, spin them in a centrifuge until they separate, and inject the result into a patient. Some people might feel better from a placebo effect, but the treatment itself isn't likely to have any benefit, he said.

Why should it fix your heart? he said. You don't make heart from fat stem cells.

People tend to underestimate the risks of an experimental procedure when they face a life-changing disease, and enthusiasm for stem cells has outrun understanding, Kincade said. For example, he's seen cosmetics that claim to be made with fruit stem cells which have no use for humans, he said.

Patients are desperate, and we understand that, he said. Too often, people are set on that stem cells are going to fix it.

If you ever fantasized about being someone's hero, there's a simple way to save a life rub a cotton swab on the inside of your cheek, Earl Young told freshmen at Oklahoma Christian University on Wednesday.

Young, who won a gold medal as part of the U.S. men's 4x400 meter relay team at the 1960 Rome Olympics, visited the university to encourage students to register to donate bone marrow. He was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2011 and told he had three months to live, unless he had a marrow transplant. He was fortunate enough to have a match: a German woman named Christine Waag who had registered just two weeks earlier.

Had she not become a donor, I wouldn't be telling you this, because she was the only match of the 20 million on file, he said.

Bone marrow contains stem cells, which turn into the red blood cells that carry oxygen, white blood cells that fight infections and platelets that cause blood to clot, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Some people with blood cancers or diseases like sickle cell anemia need a transplant because their marrow can't produce healthy cells.

Unfortunately, only about 40 percent of people who need a bone-marrow transplant find a match, which makes it vital to expand the number of potential donors, Young said.

I'm not asking you to jump into a foxhole. I'm not asking you to run into a burning building, he said. I'm asking you to swab your cheek.

The student group Eagles Health Initiative invited Young to speak to the incoming freshmen class during orientation week, club president Whitney Hall said. She said she hopes about half the 550 freshmen would agree to participate.

We wanted them to be part of something, she said.

Olivia Haddox, a donor recruitment coordinator at DKMS, which runs a donor registry, said colleges are particularly good places to recruit because most students haven't developed chronic conditions that could disqualify them from donating.

After answering questions to determine if they are eligible, donors swab their cheeks to collect cells, Haddox said. A lab then tests the DNA for the human leukocyte antigens (HLAs) on the cells, she said.

HLAs are proteins on the surface of cells that the body uses to determine if a cell is part of itself, or an invader that should be destroyed, according to Be the Match, another donor-recruiting organization. The closer the donor and recipient's HLA profiles are, the more likely the transplant will be a success.

People who share a common ancestry are more likely to have matching HLA profiles, Haddox said, which makes it important to register people from a variety of backgrounds.

The goal here is to really diversify it as much as possible, she said.

Freshman Megan Arispe, who signed up during the drive, said her family had a scare a few years ago when they thought her sister would need a transplant. Fortunately, her condition turned out not to be leukemia, but the experience impressed on them how important marrow donors were, she said.

Asia Sanders, also a freshman, said she didn't have a personal connection to blood diseases, but wanted to volunteer if someone needed her bone marrow.

If I can help, why not help? she said.

Bartlesville continues to play an integral part in Phillips 66 culture and future, the companys chairman and CEO said Wednesday.

Greg Garland was the featured speaker at a Bartlesville Regional Chamber of Commerce forum held Aug. 16 at City Church in Bartlesville..

Garland has led the Houston-based company for its five years of existence, building on the legacy of Phillips Petroleum Co., founded 100 years ago in Bartlesville.

We want to be a viable, vibrant part of the communities that we live and work, and we encourage employees to give back, Garland said in an interview with the EE following the forum. We dont just want to but money into the community, but we also want to but sweat equity in.

Garland said the 2,100 Phillips 66 employees in Bartlesville are invested in helping kids read and advancing science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills because the company is strong believers is those endeavours.

One major contribution that Phillips 66 placed in the Bartlesville community is a 2015 $1.7 million donation to establish STEM education and innovation labs in Bartlesville Public Schools.

One of the things we do is we have corporate initiatives that we support and if you are an employee that wants to help in that initiative, we fully support that, Garland said. We even give paid time throughout the year for our employees to take time away from the office to support these initiatives. Its just incredible how our employees and retirees continue to invest themselves in the community.

Garland said that commitment underscores Phillips 66s value to give back to the community.

Merl Lindstrom, Phillips 66 vice president of technology, joined Garland in showing the support the company has to Bartlesvilles operations. Lindstrom is based at the Phillips 66 Research Center in west Bartlesville.

The company and its partner, Chevron Phillips Chemical, have made millions of dollars in infrastructure and research investments to make sure both CPChem and Phillips 66 are ready for the future.

Our mantra says we will provide energy and improve lives, and that allows us at the Research Center to do a lot of things we havent done in the past, Lindstrom said. We are looking at solar energy, fuel cells and improving lives to allow us to do research on water. Water is one of our biggest research areas. Our work continues in hydrocarbons as well, but we are diversifying to make sure we are looking at things holistically instead of just a very narrow region.

Aug. 1, Phillips 66 reported consolidated second-quarter earnings of $550 million or $1.06 per share, compared to $535 million in the first quarter this year and $496 million in the second quarter of 2016.

Adjusted earnings were $569 million or $1.09 per share this year, compared to $499 million or 94 cents per share in 2016.

Second quarter earnings increased 11 percent year over year, beating analysts expectations.

Even with the financial success of Phillips 66 in refining, transportation and marketing, the company is dealing with energy downturns on the exploration and production side of oil business.

These are margin businesses and it is continually volatile, Garland said. Were not completely immune to the downturn on the exploration and production side of the business. These are great times for us as a midstream and downstream company to think about how we do our work, how we meet the needs of our customers in a more efficient way. We are doing that by using technology and exploring options on how we work. At the end of the day, we are competing in a global marketplace, and Phillips 66 is well-positioned to continue competing in this industry.

Oklahoma Republicans Introduce Bill That Prohibits The …

No, this isnt from The Onion. Its a REAL bill that has been introduced by Republicans in the Oklahoma Senate. Introduced by Republican Ralph Shortey, Senate bill 1418 makes it illegal to make or sell food or other products that contain human fetuses, including in research and development.Republicans introduced the bill after a Christian Right anti-abortion group claimedthat several major food companies are using embryonic stem cells to enhance the flavor of their products. The allegations never got off the ground and the accused companies have flatly denied doing such a thing. Thats because its not only unethical to use stem cells in such a manner, its also illegal under US law (and disgusting). Yet Oklahoma Republicans, eager to please pro-life groups, are moving forward with their bill which just so happens to have a few additional benefits for stem cell research opponents.

Here is the text of the bill which can be found on the Oklahoma Legislature website:

SENATE BILL 1418 By: Ralph Shortey

AS INTRODUCED

An Act relating to food; prohibiting the manufacture or sale of food or products which use aborted human fetuses; providing for codification; and providing an effective date.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA: SECTION 1. NEW LAW A new section of law to be codified in the Oklahoma Statutes as Section 1-1150 of Title 63, unless there is created a duplication in numbering, reads as follows: No person or entity shall manufacture or knowingly sell food or any other product intended for human consumption which contains aborted human fetuses in the ingredients or which used aborted human fetuses in the research or development of any of the ingredients. SECTION 2. This act shall become effective November 1, 2012

Obviously I completely support making it illegal to make or sell food that contains human fetuses if such a thing even exists (it doesnt). But if you read the bill and think about it for a minute, it also covertly outlaws stem cell research and stem cell products used for medicinal purposes that could one day cure diseases such as Alzheimers and Parkinsons disease among many other ailments. Depending on the source, stem cell treatments could fall under a product that contains aborted human fetuses. You consume medicine in the same sense that you consume food; it enters the body and is processed in some fashion. Whether it is used for energy or to heal a damaged brain is irrelevant to this law.

The Republicans in Oklahoma are attempting to outlaw stem cell research and treatments under the guise of forbidding the use of fetuses in food. I dont know about you, but Ive never heard of any instance where a human fetus was used as an ingredient in food. This is kind of similar to the bevy of voter ID laws being passed by Republicans in states across the country that disenfranchise Democratic voter bases under the guise of fighting non-existent voter fraud. Its all about fighting some non-existent action that seemingly only happens in the minds of Republicans.

Its clear that Republicans are looking to trap Democrats with this bill. On the one hand, if Democrats vote in favor of the bill, Republicans will have succeeded in banning embryonic stem cell research and treatments. On the other hand, if Democrats vote against it, Republicans will accuse Democrats of wanting to eat fetuses. Its a classic Republican tactic. Dont get me wrong. I support banning using fetuses as food, but I oppose any attempt to ban stem cell research that could save millions of lives from being ruined by incurable diseases. Republicans mostly take issue with embryonic stem cell research which involves the use the embryos created using In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Many embryos are generated to enhance the success rate. The leftover embryos are either stored, slated for destruction, or are donated for research such as stem cell research. I honestly dont see what the big deal is. These embryos are donated and are stored so long that they are no longer viable so why not use them for research instead of wasting them by destroying them? It makes sense to me. So at the very least, Republicans should change the language in the bill. At any rate, shouldnt Republicans be focusing on other things, like the economy and jobs and health care, and things that actually matter to people who are already born?
