UW professor using stem cell research to find treatment …

John Hart/Wisconsin State Journal

Through stem cell research, two Madison men who suffer from a genetic condition that causes blindness and hearing loss are receiving experimental treatment.

Johnny and Mike Walsh, sons of University of Wisconsin Regent David Walsh who suffer from Usher disease are helping David Gamm, a UW professor and expert in retinal and stem biology, by giving him their blood cells in order to search for a treatment for degenerative eye conditions.

Johnny has had hearing problems from birth and is now legally blind. However, he maintains a positive attitude due to the experimental treatment he is receiving in Madison and does not let his disability get in the way of his career as an attorney at Axley Brynelson LLP.

It is interesting that here I am in Madison getting a diagnosis and then having such a great research institution there in my backyard and its convenient for them to have my family there because you got four kids, three who carry the genes, two who are affected and one who isnt. So you have a perfect control right there, I think thats kind of neat for Dr. [David] Gamm to have and he takes our blood whenever he needs it, Walsh said.

Mike started a project entitled Flight4Sight, where he travels the world to spread awareness and understanding about blindness. His project is on Facebook and a blog, where he takes his followers advice on where to travel next.

Mike said he benefits from the research Gamm, of the Waisman Center, does.

Gammis working closely with Cellular Dynamics International, a Madison-based company which has recently received a $1.2 million grant to continue their research on human stem cells.

CDI specializes in creating human cells, including various types of stem cells. With the National Eye Institutes funding, CDI will carry out this stem cell-based research in the first study of its kind to be performed in the United States.

Eye conditions that include dry age-related macular degeneration affect as many as 11 million Americans who have some form of macular degeneration, according to the CDI statementregarding the grant. The cells being used for this study are CDI developed and manufactured through induced pluripotent stem cells, which will potentially have application in discovering treatments for retinal and eye conditions.

Karen Davila resorts to stem-cell therapy for sons autism

Broadcast journalist Karen Davilas firstborn, David, was 3 years old when he was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified (PDD/NOS) in the Autism Spectrum, a severe form of autism. The development pediatrician said there was no cure for Davids condition. David didnt have the classic signs of autism, but clearly he wasnt developing like other children his age, says Davila. At the age of 3, he wasnt speaking spontaneously, although he could read. He had tantrums, couldnt express his needs, whether he was hungry or sad, and didnt reach out to other children his age.

Like most kids in the autism spectrum, the boy had attention difficulties. He was spaced out most of the time, and was rigid. It was so heartbreaking to see my eldest this way, she adds. Davila refused to accept that there was no answer to her sons condition. I researched endlessly and devoted myself to making sure my son got the best possible treatment, she says. She quickly put her son on a casein- and gluten-free diet and biomedical treatment, under the care of Defeat Autism Now (DAN)-licensed doctors.

Early last year, Davila was offered an opportunity to try the fresh cell therapy being offered by a clinic in Germany. The stem cells are harvested from lamb fetus and injected into the patient. By then, the journalist-mom had read up on the supposed benefits of stem cell on children with special needs. In March, mother and son flew to Frankfurt.

I didnt consult with Davids doctors, Davila admits. But I have an aggressive-progressive approach to Davids condition. Im willing to try anything that could help my son. Doctors will frown upon this (lamb stem cell) since it is not accepted in the medical field, but I did try it for Davids sake.

Around June last year, Dr. Z Teo and his wife, dermatologist Aivee Aguilar-Teo, introduced autologous fat stem-cell therapy or fat stem-cell therapy in their clinic. Dr. Teo has been performing fat stem cell repair therapy or FSCR in his clinic in Singapore for a few years.

Unlike the sheep stem cell, FSCR harvests fat from the patients tummy or thigh; a machine then isolates the stem cells from the fat. The fresh stem cell is then injected back into the patients body to stimulate the production of new, healthy cells. In patients who are too old or too sick, or have autism like David, fat stem cells are taken from a close blood kin.

Speaking to her sons autism specialists, Davila says they have no strong opposition against autologous fat stem-cell therapy.

Davids procedure is deemed safe, but blood screening, infectious screening, and compatibility testing and complete physical checkup must be performed prior to the procedure, says Dr. Aguilar-Teo. Compatibility testing is vital to determine which of the parents is a better-match donor, she adds. The clinic has performed 50-60 FSCRs since last year, only a handful of which share the same case as Davids.

As for its effect on David, after just a week or two, the results were dramatic, Davila says. We noticed that David was quicker in question-and-answer response. He was visibly more aware, more in the moment, and he was bantering more at home and in school.

Bowman doctor brings stem cell therapy to North Dakota …

Dr. Forrest Lanchbury, a specialist in anti-aging and regenerative medicine and medical director at Bowmans Southwest Healthcare Services, looks on as registered nurse Chrissy Blankenbaker works on a plasma-rich platelet procedure on Jan. 29 at the facility. Lanchbury and his team became the first to offer stem cell and PRP therapy in North Dakota in November. (Nadya Faulx / Forum News Service)

BOWMAN, N.D. -- Southwest North Dakota is a place known more for its oil industry than its health care, but one doctor is putting the region on the map with a new cutting-edge medical procedure that's attracting patients from across the state.

Dr. Forrest Lanchbury and a team of nurses now provide stem cell therapy to patients at Bowman's Southwest Healthcare Services, making it the only facility in North Dakota to offer the procedure, in which a patient's own stem cells are injected to a specific site in order to encourage healing.

Lanchbury, the facility's medical director, performed the first stem cell therapy in November, and has performed five total since the procedure became available.

"Everybody was really interested in it," he said, "and impressed with the potential to help patients."

Stem cell therapy is used to treat a multitude of ailments, from heart disease to neurological disorders, but Lanchbury said most of the patients who have undergone the procedure in Bowman do so to treat osteoarthritis and other joint diseases.

Stem cells multiply rapidly and can turn into other types of tissues and cells, depending on what needs to be healed, Lanchbury explained, meaning they have "the potential to heal any type of damaged tissue."

"Most healing takes place in any place in our body is done by stem cells," he said. "A cut, any injury to a tendon or ligament, or arthritis -- stem cells are involved within the body in healing that."

The process is deceptively simple: It involves harvesting an adult's own stem cells via liposuction (stem cells are also found in bone marrow, but are more plentiful in fat), mixing them with platelet-rich plasma and injecting the solution into the tendon or joint being treated.

Pros & Cons of Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Posted: September 27, 2014 at 8:54 am

On March 9, 2009, President Barack Obama lifted, by Executive Order, the Bush administration's eight-year ban on federal funding of embryonic stem research.

Remarked the President, "Today... we will bring the change that so many scientists and researchers, doctors and innovators, patients and loved ones have hoped for, and fought for, these past eight years."

See Obama's Remarks on Lifting the Embryonic Stem Cell Research Ban, in which he also signed a Presidential Memorandum directing development of a strategy for restoring scientific integrity to government decision-making.

BUSH VETOES IN 2006, 2007

In 2005, H.R. 810, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005, was passed by the Republican-led House in May 2005 by a vote of 238 to 194. The Senate passed the bill in July 2006 by a bipartisan vote of 63 to 37.

President Bush opposed embryonic stem cell research on ideological grounds. He exercised his first presidential veto on July 19, 2006 when he refused to allow H.R. 810 to become law. Congress was unable to muster enough votes to override the veto.

In April 2007, the Democratic-led Senate passed the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007 by a vote of 63 to 34. In June 2007, the House passed the legislation by a vote of 247 to 176.

President Bush vetoed the bill on June 20, 2007.

PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH

For years, all polls report that the American public STRONGLY supports federal funding of embryonic stem cell research.

Additionally, many traditional medical treatments are riddled with drugs and medications that can sometimes cause even more harm to other parts of the body. Further risks of medication mixups, allergies, destruction of the immune system and the constant level of additional medical treatments that may be required, can sometimes weigh heavily on a patient and their chances of regaining a healthful way of life. Recovery can become difficult or almost impossible in some cases.

We offer an alternative treatment or a more stem cell process that centers around the idea of using your own adult stem cells as the basis of this natural treatment. In some areas of the country, traditional medicine and medical practices may not have acknowledged the benefits that stem cell treatments can bring to the healing process. Stem cell treatments may not be a standard course of medical treatment quite yet, but that may be a result of other political and/or profit motives. But rest assured that is all changing and changing quite rapidly as more and more success and overwhelming evidence indicates that adult stem cell therapy is a very successful and viable treatment process for Diarrhoea.

Stem cell treatment is extremely effective and very safe. It is also very natural, ethical and a very effective way in assisting the body to heal naturally and wholesomely.
