Diseases Treated Using Stem Cells – Stem Cell Disease …

Posted: September 27, 2014 at 8:57 am

Cord blood stem cell transplants have already changedand savedthousands of lives around the world. They have already been used to treat more than 75 diseases, including numerous types of malignancies, anemia's, inherited metabolic disorders and deficiencies of the immune system.

New medical technology may well use these cells to rebuild cardiac tissue, repair damage due to stroke or spinal cord injuries and reverse the effects of such diseases as multiple sclerosis or Parkinsons. While the research is still in its early stages, the possibilities are extremely promising. And, banking your childs stem cells increases access to any of these technologies in the future.

Mystery donor of $1 million for stem cell research in …

Posted: September 21, 2014 at 11:56 pm

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- It's a secret no more.

The donor who gave $1 million last spring to the newly formed Alabama Institute of Medicine has been revealed: Chris Drummond. (Think coal).

He's the youngest of seven children of coal magnate, Garry Neal Drummond, CEO of Drummond Company, one of the world's largest private companies.

His name was revealed to AL.com just ahead of a big fund-raising gala this evening at WorkPlay.

The big reveal was inevitable as it is disclosed in a new book by Tory Williams, co-founder of the private, nonprofit company which received the donation. She was unpacking boxes of the book at WorkPlay today to give away to the 176 guests at the sold-out event. The gala features entertainer Taylor Hicks. The moderator is Peter Wilderotter, president and CEO of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation.

The 28-year-old Drummond is introverted and has reluctantly agreed to be named, Williams said.

But she said Drummond is excited about the potential that stem cell research both medically and economically for Alabama and hopes his donation will inspire others to give.

Willilams met Drummond through her husband, Ron Williams, a medical sales manager with Stryker Orthopaedics. The couple invited Drummond to go with them, along with AIM co-founder Roman Reed, to the 2013 World Stem Cell Summit in California.

"He [Drummond] was blown away," Williams said.

Drummond's million-dollar donation last March kick-started the Alabama nonprofit, which immediately funded three projects at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. For details go here.

The Agenda: Harrell suspends himself, gets suspended; Who'll replace him?; DSS said father was "overwhelmed"

Posted: September 12, 2014 at 10:53 pm

Turns out that under state law, House Speaker Bobby Harrell couldn't suspend himself unilaterally yesterday as he tried to do originally, so in a painfully awkward letter issued late yesterday, Speaker Pro Tem Jay Lucas, operating under the authority as presiding officer of the House, assumed when Harrell's indictment was filed Wednesday, suspended him officially. [P&C]

A number of his Republican colleagues, including Berkeley Rep. Jim Merrill are said to be vying to replace Harrell's position on the dais. [The State]

State Democrats are making the case that House Rep. Stephen Goldfinch should also be suspended over federal charges he's facing that a company he ran illegally sold stem cells, but House Clerk Charles Reid said that the charges don't rise to the level of necessitating a suspension. For his part, Goldfinch said the criminal charges shouldn't be relevant in his re-election bid. [South Strand News]

The city unanimously granted conceptual approval to the Digital Corridor's new Flagship 3 building to go up in NoMo near the corner of Morrison and Conroy St. [CRBJ]

The 'overwhelmed' father accused of killing his five children and then driving to Alabama to dump their bodies reportedly made a stop at an Upstate Dunkin Donuts over Labor Day weekend, parking by the dumpster at the shop to mask the reported "stench of death" that was apparent in the car. [P&C, WYFF, AP]

Congressman Trey Gowdy says the first public hearing for the special committee investigating the 2012 attacks in Benghazi will be held next week, on September 17. [G'ville News]

The P&C's Andrew Knapp has the heartbreaking account of slain Charleston County deputy Joseph Matuskovic's final hours before he died on duty in West Ashley at the hands of a drunken man who shot his military-style rifle through the door of his apartment when the deputy and his partner knocked. [P&C]

Some frustrated school administrators say the state dragged their feet as individual schools sought waivers from new federal healthy food guidelines for schools, leading to no S.C. schools getting exemptions that would include allowing familiar school fundraisers, such as doughnuts or candy sales. [WYFF]

According to a dossier posted on @CofCSports yesterday, new CofC basketball coach Earl Grant's musical tastes should line up well with Kresse and Cremins. Favorite song: Drake's "Hold On, Were Going Home."

Precision StemCell – StemCell Procedures – ALS Treatment

ALS Treatment

Frank Orgel - Former Auburn Coach

QUOTE FROM ARTICLE: One of the ALS patients, former NFL football player and college coach Frank Orgel, recently underwent a new stem cell reprogramming technique performed by Dr. Jason R. Williams at Precision StemCell in Gulf Shores. Before the injections, Orgel's health had declined. He could not move his left armor leg. He couldn't walk or stand on his own, he said.

Neurodegenerative diseases, such as ALS are very devastating and have little treatment options. In early 2012 we were approached to treat Frank Orgel, a patient diagnosed with ALS. There had been only limited work with the use of mesenchymal stem cells for the treatment of conditions such as ALS. The initial concern was that neural conditions would need neural stem cells. Neural stem cells can be difficult to obtain. This led us to use a new technique involving reprogramming of the stem cells. We first treated Frank, unsure if he would receive any benefits. To our surprise, he began getting movement in his leg and his fasciculations significantly improved. This seemed like a big step in ALS therapy. We have since treated several other patients, with most seeing modest improvement in their condition. This is certainly not a cure, but it has led us in the direction to improve treatment for ALS. We believe this same technique may translate into therapy for other conditions such as Parkinsons and Multiple Sclerosis. Please see our research section for further insight into the therapies being developed for neurodegenerative diseases.

For many years it has been theorized that stem cells may hold the answer to treating nerve and cord injuries, resulting in paralysis. We felt that neural reprogramming of mesenchymal stem cells could increase the number of stem cells that can be delivered and improve the chances of obtaining a positive response. We have limited experience with the treatment of 2 patients with spinal cord injury resulting in slight gain in movement. These cases are still early and nerves take a long time to regrow. This is a good initial start and hopefully this therapy can develop enough to allow these patients to gain enough use to improve their overall function.

Precision StemCell has partnered with Neuralgene to perform studies to evaluate PRCN-829 which is a gene therapy designed to inhibit the attack of Complement and reduce toxic build up of proteins such as TDP-43.

Stem cells repair and replenish cells within our body. The problem is that as we age or get injuries, there may not be enough stem cells in the area to adequately repair or regenerate. Precision StemCell procedures take care of that problem by removing a large store of stem cells and placing them in the location where they are needed. The stem cell procedure involves harvesting stem cells that are located within fat tissue.

The fat is removed with a minimally invasive liposuction procedure. The fat is then processed to separate the stem cells. In addition, some blood is taken from a vein in the patients arm to obtain platelet rich plasma (PRP). PRP contains growth factors, which help stimulate the growth of the stem cells. PRP is mixed with the stem cells prior to injection. These stem cells are then injected back into the body at the point of injury the same day. Tens of millions of stem cells are delivered to the injured area, more than your body could ever deliver on its own.

Precision StemCell is different from many other same-day stem cell procedures because the stem cells injected under precise image guidance such as CT, MRI, Fluoroscopy and Ultrasound.

There are many medical conditions, which are only visible on MRI. This is why an MRI is needed to diagnose many orthopedic conditions. To inject stem cells into injuries only visible by MRI, you need MRI guidance to place them in the appropriate location. We have a large bore 3 Tesla MRI which allow us to use MRI guidance when needed.

Faith based organizations critical of ALS Association's research

Posted: August 27, 2014 at 8:57 pm

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The concern that's being voiced by some individuals and groups, including some faith based organizations, is that the group receiving most of the donations, the ALS Association, conducts research using immoral methods.

But officials with the ALS Association say get all the facts before you make that decision.

Through the ice bucket challenge, close to $90 million has now been raised for ALS research.

"It's unprecedented, nothing we planned and more than we could have ever hoped for," said Cassie Barnes, Executive Director of the ALS Association's Alabama Chapter.

The majority of the money raised has gone to the ALS Association. But now some groups, including the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham, are urging people not to give to that group saying they conc duct research using embryonic stem cells.

"We have to be mindful of how they do their research. Not all medical research will respect life and the catholic church teaches we should respect life from the moment of conception to natural death. Father Doug Vu said, Spokesperson for the Catholic Diocese of Birmingham.

Father Vu stresses the Catholic Church is not against the challenges or finding a cure for any disease

"But we can never destroy life in hopes of finding a cure for sickness and or illness society might have," Father Vu said.

Cassie Barnes is head of the ALS Association's Alabama chapter and says yes, there is one single research project funded by the national chapter that uses embryonic stem cells.

Birmingham Business Journal - Jimmy DeButts reports in article entitled UAB to Bring Jobs, Research through Stem Cell Institute. The University of Alabama at Birmingham is building on the success of its existing biotech research facilities to create a Stem Cell Institute.

The institutes founders and industry experts expect it will bring great benefits for the Birmingham area economy as well as the stem cell research arena. Located in central Alabama, UAB cited the high rate of sickle cell anemia in the African American community as a part of its resolution to establish the Stem Cell Institute. For more than two decades, UAB has been researching sickle cell anemia, one of more than 75 diseases which are currently treated with stem cells from sources such as umbilical cord blood. The article reports that a key to the institutes success is educating the public on the difference between using adult stem cells opposed to controversial embryonic cells, said the Biotechnology Association of Alabamas Executive Director, Kathy Nugent. According to the article, Nugent also commented that if UAB can proactively highlight the use of adult stem cells so the publics initial reaction to stem cell research isnt negative, the institute could lay the foundation for significant economic development opportunities. The new Stem Cell Institute will be headed by Tim Townes, chairman of UABs biochemistry and molecular genetics department.
